Senator Ali Ndume has called for a shift in Nigeria’s approach to development, asserting that the country has the resources to support its citizens and even help others. Speaking on Channels Television, Ndume, who represents Borno South, emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges stem from poor leadership, not a lack of resources.
“The security and welfare of Nigerian citizens should be the responsibility of the government, not any other nation,” Ndume stated. He urged a change in mindset, pushing for Nigeria to transition from being an aid recipient to becoming a donor nation.
He further remarked, “This is a wake-up call for all of us. We have everything we need. The only issue is leadership.”
His comments come amid growing concerns about foreign aid, especially following the Trump administration’s criticism of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The administration labeled USAID as a “criminal organization,” with allies like Elon Musk and Congressman Scott Perry accusing the agency of mismanagement and funding controversial projects abroad.
Ndume also pointed out how Nigeria’s attractiveness to foreign investors and expatriates has diminished, noting that many Nigerians are now forced to seek jobs abroad, often in unfavorable conditions. He urged fellow citizens to demand better leadership to shape a more prosperous future for Nigeria.
