According to the country’s president, at least 40 people were killed and many others were seriously injured in a bus crash in central Senegal on Sunday.
“I am deeply saddened by today’s tragic road accident in Gniby, which killed 40 people and injured many more. In a tweet, President Macky Sall expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
According to Radiodiffusion Télévision Sénégalaise (RTS), the country’s public broadcaster, the incident involved two buses colliding with one another.
The president announced that the country will observe three days of national mourning for the victims, beginning on January 9.
The cause of the crash is still unknown. The Senegalese Transport Ministry has been contacted for comment.
According to Sall, Dakar will also convene an inter-ministerial council on January 9 to discuss “firm measures” to ensure transportation safety.
