Seven men have been detained by Nigerian police on suspicion of torturing and assaulting a 40-year-old lady in the state of Enugu in the country’s southeast.
A legal aid volunteer said in a police report that the group searched the woman’s home after accusing her of entering a “holy woodland” to gather snails. The wife, her four children, and her elderly mother were reportedly living in the home when it was reportedly raided by at least ten guys.
The woman was afterward stripped and made to walk through the town while being beaten with sticks and rods. The woman was later saved and rushed to the hospital, where it is said that she is in critical condition. She and her attackers are both from the Agunese Affam-Mmaku group.
