In a dominant display, second seed Jannik Sinner sailed past Wimbledon quarter-finalist Christopher Eubanks in straight sets to advance to the second round of the French Open on Monday.
Despite the rain pouring down at Roland Garros, the Italian sensation secured a comfortable 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory under the new roof of Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Having missed the recent Rome Open due to a hip injury, the Australian Open champion showed no signs of fitness concerns. Sinner, known for his powerful play, unleashed 32 winners and broke Eubanks’ serve five times, setting up a second-round clash with French veteran Richard Gasquet.
Reflecting on his return to action, Sinner expressed his joy at being back on the court after his injury setback. He highlighted the significance of the French Open for him and assured that his hip was in good condition, though he acknowledged that his overall fitness was still a work in progress.
This tournament marks Sinner’s third appearance since his triumph at the Miami Masters in March. Despite a semi-final loss at the Monte Carlo Masters and withdrawal from the Madrid Open due to injury, Sinner’s win on Monday further solidified his impressive 29-2 win-loss record for the season.
At just 22 years old, Sinner aims to surpass his previous best performance at the French Open, where he reached the quarter-finals on his debut in 2020. Meanwhile, Eubanks, who impressed at Wimbledon last year, has struggled, losing seven consecutive matches.
