Every day, it seems, another tech company announces that it, too, will join the rest of the internet in welcoming AI into its ranks.
Snapchat announced the launch of My AI, a Snapchat-specific chatbot powered by OpenAI’s GPT technology, on Monday. The feature, which will be available this week, is currently only available on an “experimental” basis for $3.99 per month Snapchat Plus subscribers, the company said in a blog post (Opens in a new tab).
“The big idea is that we’re going to talk to AI every day, in addition to talking to our friends and family every day,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel told The Verge (Opens in a new tab). “And this is something we’re in a good position to do.”

With the feature, users can name My AI and customize the wallpaper for their chat. Expect My AI to work in the same way that you might expect ChatGPT to work: Request that it write a note for your crush or suggest a plan for a night out. Unlike ChatGPT, My AI isn’t designed to function like a search engine; instead, it’s designed to function like messaging another person within Snapchat, just like you would your friends.
Snapchat claims that all conversations with My AI will be saved in order to improve the product, so don’t share too much. You can provide feedback to My AI by pressing and holding on any of its messages. According to The Verge, Snapchat is one of the first social media platforms to use OpenAI’s enterprise-tier Foundry, a tool that allows businesses to run ChatGPT (Opens in a new tab).
Despite the fact that Snapchat has over 750 million monthly active users, including 75% of 13- to 34-year-olds in over 20 countries, the company is still struggling. For the time being, My AI may be able to increase its paid subscriber numbers, and TechCrunch reports that the company believes(Opens in a new tab) that incorporating this AI technology has the potential to be a huge draw for users.
