Somali Forces Assume Security Duties as AU Troops Withdraw
The Somali defense ministry has expressed its gratitude for the efforts and sacrifices made by the African Union (AU) mission and the contributing countries, including Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. In a significant development, Somali forces have taken over security responsibilities in five out of six sectors previously occupied by AU troops.

The handover process began with the withdrawal of 2,000 AU soldiers, which was completed by the end of June as scheduled. The majority of the military bases transferred so far are situated in the Lower Shabelle region and were previously under the control of the Burundian contingent.
By the end of September, an additional 3,000 AU soldiers are expected to withdraw, with the complete departure of the AU force from Somalia anticipated by the end of 2024. Since 2007, the AU has been supporting the Somali government in its fight against the al-Shabab Islamist militant group, and this transition marks a significant step towards Somali forces assuming full responsibility for security in their country.
