Janne Andersson, the former head coach of Sweden’s national team, has confirmed he is in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) about the vacant Super Eagles head coach position. The NFF has been on the lookout for a new coach for over two months since Finidi George stepped down.
Andersson, who has shown interest in leading the Super Eagles, has spoken about the allure of managing a top footballing nation like Nigeria. In a recent interview with the Swedish newspaper Expressen, he said, “Nigeria is a major footballing country, so I’m very honored to be considered for their national team coach role.”
He added, “Discussions are ongoing, and I prefer to keep details under wraps for now. I’ve been in this profession long enough to know that things can change quickly, so we’ll see how it unfolds.”
This marks the first time that Andersson, or any other coaches linked to the Super Eagles role, have confirmed negotiations with the NFF. Another prominent name in the mix is Hervé Renard, a French coach with two Africa Cup of Nations titles to his name.
The Super Eagles, currently without a coach, are preparing for their upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda in September 2024.
