Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has earned a spot in the Premier League Team of the Week following his standout performance in Nottingham Forest’s surprising 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.
Aina played a pivotal role in Forest’s resilient defense, helping secure their first league win at Anfield in 55 years. His impressive display did not go unnoticed, earning praise from Premier League icon Alan Shearer, who named him in his Game Week best XI.
“Shearer highlighted Aina’s exceptional defensive work, particularly in keeping Luis Diaz at bay,” noting, “It’s a significant achievement to contain a player in such fine form.”
Playing the full 90 minutes, Aina was instrumental in disrupting Liverpool’s attacks, with a crucial moment coming when he cleared a goal-bound shot from Diaz off the line in the first half.
Aina’s selection in the Team of the Week underscores the success of Nuno Espirito Santo’s tactical approach. The Portuguese manager’s strategy of a deep defensive line coupled with swift counter-attacks proved effective, culminating in Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring the decisive goal.
Alongside Aina, defenders Murillo and Alex Moreno from Forest also made the cut, as did midfielder Elliot Anderson and manager Nuno Espirito Santo. The Team of the Week featured standout performances from players across seven different clubs.
Noteworthy mentions included Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez, Manchester United’s Matthijs de Ligt, and Arsenal’s Gabriel, while Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins were recognized for their impressive goal-scoring feats.
