Randy Waldrum has stepped down as head coach of Nigeria’s Super Falcons to focus on his wife’s health. Waldrum, who has been leading the team since 2020, made the decision to resign to support his wife through her illness.
Under Waldrum’s guidance, the Super Falcons achieved several notable milestones. He steered the team to a semi-final finish at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco and led them to the round of 16 at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The team set a record for conceding the fewest goals in their World Cup history, allowing just two. Additionally, Waldrum qualified the Falcons for the 2024 Olympics for the first time in 16 years.
Despite high hopes for the Olympics, the team did not advance past the group stage, facing defeats from Japan, Spain, and Brazil. Waldrum attributed the disappointing results to inadequate preparation.
In his resignation letter dated September 12, 2024, Waldrum expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his regret over the circumstances leading to his departure. He wrote:
“It’s been a very challenging period following the Olympics due to my wife’s health concerns. After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons. This will provide the NFF with sufficient time to find a new manager for this remarkable team.”
Waldrum’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the Super Falcons, and the search for a new head coach will begin as the team looks ahead to future competitions.
