In 2008, SZA dated Drake; today, she’s thinking about their once-closeted relationship again.
The singer was asked about their connection, which Drake initially made public on 21 Savage’s 2020 smash “Mr. Right Now,” while promoting her new album SOS in an interview with Big Tigger for “Audacy Check In.”
He raps on the Savage Mode II song, “Said she wants to f**k to some SZA-wait, ‘cuz I used to date SZA back in ’08.”
When a “PSA” about Drake’s ex-girlfriends banding together to create a support group was broadcast, Tigger remarked that it must have been “awkward” for her to be on the “SNL” set.
In a peculiar manner, I wondered, “Did they know?” SZA expressed astonishment that they hadn’t approached her about taking part given their history. When they announced the Drake skit, she was backstage. “When I first saw it, I thought, This is crazy.”
She continued by equating Drake to Mean Girls character Regina George, played by Rachel McAdams. She remarked, “I feel like Drake has a Regina George aspect to him. He is a cool kid, sort of. It’s amusing to be the popular child at school, but occasionally you have to deal with the consequences of that amusement.
After viewing the “SNL” skit on her ex, SZA says she “certainly laughed real hard,” but she was also uneasy. I wondered if I would be called to the stage.
Drake and SZA dated for 14 years, and according to SZA, they are still amicable. “We’ve always been cool; we are cool. Never has it been strange. It never happens completely out of the blue, according to SZA, who received a heads-up from Drake before the release of “Mr. Right Now.”
“He has only ever mentioned me in nice terms. He’s never made a bad comment about me, she continued. “I appreciate that and I hold him in high regard, and I think it’s incredibly strange that after all these years, I am an artist now whereas I wasn’t before, and he’s King Drake,” the speaker said.
On tracks like “Kill Bill” and “Smoking on My Ex Pack” from her critically lauded new album SOS, which also features appearances from Travis Scott, Don Toliver, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, SZA discusses her past relationships.
