The Tanzanian government has prohibited the use of 16 titles from a popular children’s book series in schools for allegedly advocating LGBTQ rights.
According to authorities, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series violates the country’s traditions, customs, and cultures.
According to Education Minister Adolf Mkenda, books jeopardize children’s education.
Schools that use the books will face disciplinary and legal action, including having their registration revoked, according to the authorities.
The series’ banned books include:
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw,
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever.
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Gateway.
“This is the first list, which was created after we checked and verified that the books in question violate traditions and customs. They contain content that is detrimental to Tanzanian children’s education. The investigation is still ongoing “Prof. Mkenda stated.
He urged parents to check their children’s bags on a regular basis to ensure the books are not being used.
