YouTube recently terminated the official channel of TB Joshua’s megachurch due to violations of its hate speech policies. This action follows a recent investigation by the BBC and openDemocracy, which revealed disturbing evidence of widespread sexual abuse and torture within the late preacher’s ministry.
Emmanuel TV, a pivotal platform in TB Joshua’s journey from local pastor to global figure, had amassed over half a million followers and garnered hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. This isn’t the first time the channel has faced suspension; it’s the second instance in three years due to breaches of community guidelines.
During the investigation, openDemocracy uncovered around 50 “abusive” videos on Emmanuel TV’s YouTube presence, prompting the platform to suspend the account on January 29th. Google, which owns YouTube, cited violations of hate speech policies as the reason for termination.
TB Joshua, known for his “healing” ministries, filmed numerous services claiming miraculous healings, although many former members have since debunked these claims. The content flagged by openDemocracy included footage of individuals with mental health issues being restrained, medical misinformation, and smear campaigns against women who spoke out about sexual abuse by TB Joshua.
Moreover, Emmanuel TV’s satellite channel was recently dropped by MultiChoice, a South African satellite service provider, on January 17th. Despite these actions, certain affiliated accounts continue to harass contributors who have spoken out against TB Joshua’s ministry.
The scrutiny facing YouTube and other social media platforms underscores the growing concerns over online safety policies and enforcement measures.
