There have been chaotic scenes in Dakar, Senegal’s capital, where opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was pulled from his car as he drove to court to face defamation charges.

The security forces were enraged by Mr. Sonko’s circuitous route and blocked his convoy.
An angry brawl ensued between his supporters and riot police, during which several people were injured and tear gas was fired.

There had been clashes outside his house overnight, which the police had cordoned off.
Mr. Sonko is accused of discrediting Tourism Minister Mame Mbaye Niang, but he claims the real goal of the trial is to disqualify him from running for president.
