Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, has praised Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, for his decision to withdraw a criminal defamation case against human rights activist Dele Farotimi.
Babalola’s decision, made public on Sunday night, followed the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi, alongside other prominent traditional leaders.
On Monday, Obi commended the move, highlighting it as a step toward peaceful conflict resolution.
Speaking through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi emphasized that the resolution was a result of constructive dialogue.
According to Umar, “We are pleased this matter has been resolved amicably. This outcome shows the value of dialogue and mutual understanding. Obi’s visit to Afe Babalola was not about seeking pardon for Dele Farotimi but was a sincere effort to mediate and resolve the issue.”
He continued, “As a leader, Obi prioritizes peaceful solutions to disputes, and his actions reflect this belief. Chief Babalola’s decision to withdraw the suit further underscores his commitment to resolving conflicts amicably. We appreciate this gesture and view it as a positive step forward.”
Umar concluded by noting that Obi’s intervention aimed to foster a resolution that allows all involved to move forward constructively and harmoniously.
