This year’s BET Awards paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, igniting celebrations worldwide throughout 2023. The event took place in Los Angeles and featured appearances from iconic figures such as Big Daddy Kane, Warren G, E-40, MC Lyte, Lil Uzi Vert, and more, with their performances spread out across the show. The finale highlighted significant moments in the diverse history of hip hop, including Kid ‘N Play’s legendary choreography and Soulja Boy’s viral “Crank That” dance.
A standout moment came from rising star GloRilla, who delivered an energetic rendition of her latest single, “Lick Or Sum,” on a stage resembling a giant pair of lips. Her provocative lyrics showcased her bold and unapologetic style: “I call that guy ‘bruh,’ his mother is not my mother, and stop calling me sis, I’m trying to sleep with your baby daddy, get intimate with his cousin too, I keep it within the family, he bends me like a pretzel, I’m his Auntie Annie.”

Prior to the event, Connie Orlando, BET’s EVP of Specials, Music Programming, and Music Strategy, shared insights about what viewers could expect. In a press release, she mentioned, “We have an incredible lineup of performers who will take us on a musical journey, covering hip hop from every decade, style, and region. From music to dance and fashion, we are exploring the entire spectrum as we celebrate 50 years of hip hop, its diversity, evolution, and global impact.”
Orlando expressed excitement about the upcoming event, stating, “This all-encompassing party will resonate with the incredible energy and passion these artists bring to the stage and to the culture. Get ready for an unforgettable night of reunions and surprises as we celebrate hip hop’s rich history, enduring legacy, and promising future.”
