“I’m exhausted and weak,” says Mu’mia Dawe, 25, who is seeking refuge in a mosque in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, while suffering from flu and fever symptoms.
She is one of a group of Kenyan students who claim that their calls to their embassy go unanswered. On Monday, I spoke with her about her situation.
One of the rival military forces fighting in Khartoum has occupied part of her campus at the International University of Africa.
After many days of waiting for help while gunfire and explosions rang out outside, the students are forced to make difficult choices.

She claims that a group of desperate students decided to flee to the Ethiopian border with their own money a few days ago.
Reports of their escape from the capital aired on Kenyan television, giving Dawe’s family false hope, she says, so they are devastated to learn she is still in Khartoum.
For the time being, she is staying close to a group of friends, but as frustration and fear set in, some say they want to try their luck as well.
