The Golden Globes prepared for their return on Monday by nominating the black comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” and the multiverse mashup “Everything Everywhere all at Once” after scandal and boycotts caused the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to fall into disarray and forced their annual award show off television for a year.
“The Fabelmans,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Elvis,” “Tár,” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” are the contenders for the best drama movie.
“The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “Babylon,” and “Triangle of Sadness” are the nominees for best motion picture, comedy, or musical.
With eight nominations, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a story about feuding friends, dominated all other movies. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan all received nominations. With six nominations, including nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the existential action comedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert came in second.
Brendan Fraser is one of the contenders for best actor in a drama. Fraser has declared he won’t go to the Globes because he claims Philip Berk, a longstanding HFPA member, and the organization’s previous president molested him in 2003.
In an interview with GQ that was published last month, Fraser stated, “I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I do regard for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “No, I won’t take part.”
On January 10, NBC will broadcast The Globes, with stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael serving as the host.

Quinta Brunson, Janelle James, and Tyler James Williams received nominations for their roles as the show’s leads. “Abbott Elementary” led the TV category with five nominations, including outstanding series, musical, or comedy. Four nominations were given to “The Crown,” “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Pam & Tommy,” and “White Lotus.”
This year, the Globes are attempting to make a comeback. Early in 2021, a Los Angeles Times investigation discovered that the group had no Black members at the time, which was made worse by other claims of unethical behavior. Numerous celebrities and studios declared they would skip the show. Tom Cruise gave back his three awards.
Whether Cruise chooses to attend this year may be one of the most contentious issues in the run-up to the event. “Top Gun: Maverick,” the year’s biggest box office success, is competing for two awards: best film, drama, and best song. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer was among the first to express gratitude for the film’s nominations.
In addition to “Top Gun: Maverick,” several blockbusters received Globe awards. James Cameron’s upcoming film “Avatar: The Way of Water” was nominated for best film, best drama, and best director. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” received two nominations, one each for Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” and Angela Bassett’s supporting performance.
No movie, arguably, received a bigger lift than Damien Chazelle’s epic about the silent film era, “Babylon.” Although the movie doesn’t be in theaters until later this month, it received five nominations, including ones for Diego Calva, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.
George and Mayan Lopez, a father-daughter team from NBC’s “Today” show, read the nominations on Monday. The show that was scheduled to air this past January was scrapped by NBC last year. The Golden Globes were instead discreetly held in a ballroom at the Beverly Hilton without any celebrities present, and the awards were announced through Twitter.
The HFPA has changed its membership during the past 15 months and implemented changes meant to prevent unethical conduct. The group expanded by bringing on additional, varied members.
NBC praised the HFPA for its continued improvements in bringing the Globes back on the air, but it also revised its contract. The 2023 show will be televised by the network under a one-year contract, making the January show potentially crucial for the Globes. The Globes will now be broadcast on a Tuesday instead of its customary Sunday night time slot, and NBC will also stream the ceremony on Peacock.
The Globes have consistently ranked as one of the most watched non-sporting live programs of the year due to their boisterous, celebrity-filled presentation. However, in recent years, the Globes’ ratings have declined, as they have for the majority of award shows. 6.9 million people watched the 2021 concert, which was held in the midst of the pandemic, compared to 18 million the year before.
The HFPA sold the Globes to Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries earlier this year, which is converting the organization from a nonprofit to a for-profit business. The company is also the owner of the Beverly Hilton, which has hosted the award show for many years, and Dick Clark Productions, which organizes the Globes.
The Globes can be a helpful marketing tool for Hollywood studios to draw viewers to award contenders before the Academy Awards, which will be held on March 12 of the following year. No other awarding organization has taken the place of the Globes in the past year. And some in the industry would undoubtedly expect to see the Globes regain its old shine given the poor ticket sales for many of the fall’s most lauded dramas thus far.
