Kenyan President William Ruto has defended his daughter Charlene Ruto against claims that the “Office of the First Daughter” exists.
Charlene Ruto has held several high-profile events and meetings under the title since her father’s inauguration in September.
There is no such office in Kenyan law.
The president denied the existence of such an office on Wednesday.
“Leave my daughter Charlene alone, you know these are kids, they’re just being kids, you know very well that there is no such office…. she is just being William Ruto’s daughter and sometimes she doesn’t know the divide between the president and the father,” Mr. Ruto said to journalists at State House in Nairobi.
The president’s daughter’s activities raised concerns about whether she was spending taxpayer money.
However, she denied using public funds to fund the “Office of the First Daughter” last month. She stated: “The First Daughter’s Office is a private organization. It is not a constitutional office, nor is it funded by Kenyan taxpayers.”
