TikTok has confirmed it’s dealing with a cyber-attack targeting various brands and celebrities.
The video-sharing platform, owned by ByteDance, stated to the BBC that a small number of accounts were affected.
It mentioned actively collaborating with users to regain access to their accounts without divulging more details on the cyber-attackers or their methods.
Among the compromised accounts was CNN’s, with TikTok stating they’re working closely with the news outlet to restore access and enhance security measures.
While Paris Hilton’s account was also targeted, it wasn’t compromised. Hilton, with over 10 million TikTok followers, remains an active user on the platform.
This development arises as TikTok faces a potential US ban unless it’s divested from its Chinese parent company. Concerns over data security and Beijing government links have shadowed the platform.
Moreover, TikTok is evolving into a social media arena for US political campaigning. Despite Donald Trump’s previous efforts to ban it, he recently joined TikTok, amassing over five million followers. Trump aims to leverage the platform to communicate directly with the American public.
On the other hand, President Joe Biden has a smaller following on TikTok, around 350,000, as he campaigns for re-election in November, compared to his rival’s broader reach.
