President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently meeting with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and influential Ogoni leaders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Governor Fubara arrived alongside an esteemed delegation, including Senator Lee Maeba, Senators Magnus Abe, Olaka Nwogu, Bennett Birabi Barry, Mpigi, Joe Poroma, Chief Victor Giadom, Chief Kenneth Kobani, Monsignor Pius Kii, and Ledum Mitee.
Joining the discussions are key government officials, such as Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abba, the Minister of Information, Idris Mohammed, the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
Though the agenda remains under wraps, speculation suggests the focus is on advancing the Ogoni clean-up project and addressing the resumption of oil exploration in the area.
Meanwhile, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has raised concerns about the meeting. In a statement signed by its factional leaders—Prince Nuyete Biira, Fegalo Nsuke, and Engr. Olu Andah Wai-Ogosu—MOSOP criticized their exclusion from the discussions, describing the gathering as secretive and potentially harmful to ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts in Ogoniland.
The outcome of this critical meeting could significantly influence the future of development and resource management in the region.
