Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards cleaner energy by instructing all government agencies to exclusively procure vehicles powered by natural gas. This move aims to reduce fuel expenses and promote a transition to more environmentally friendly energy sources.
According to presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu expects all government departments and agencies to gradually phase out petrol or diesel-powered vehicles. Instead, they are to opt for vehicles, generators, and tricycles that run on compressed natural gas (CNG), solar power, or electricity.
President Tinubu emphasized his commitment to leveraging Nigeria’s abundant gas resources to ease the financial strain of transportation costs on the populace.
This directive follows recent government announcements outlining plans to introduce over 2,000 gas-powered buses and tricycles by May 29, coinciding with President Tinubu’s first year in office. These initiatives underscore Nigeria’s ambition to tap into its vast gas reserves, which currently remain largely untapped due to insufficient processing infrastructure.
