According to TMZ, Tory Lanez has filed an appeal three months after being found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
The rapper’s criminal defense lawyer, Jose Baez, claims in court documents obtained by the outlet that his client’s conviction should be overturned because “irrelevant evidence” was presented during the trial.
According to Baez, a shirtless photo of Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, holding a gun to his chest was used to “underscore to the jury his client’s fondness for weapons.”
The lawyer also claims that prosecutors made a “reversible error” by threatening to show the jury the rap lyrics of the “Jerry Sprunger” emcee.
Furthermore, Baez believes that the jury should not have heard an 80-minute interview with Megan’s former BFF, Kelsey Harris, who was in the vehicle with both rappers the night of the shooting.
Lanez’s case was harmed by Harris’ interview, even though she later recanted most of what she said.
Lanez was convicted in December 2022 of shooting Megan — born Megan Pete — in the back of the feet after a verbal altercation after leaving Kylie Jenner’s house in July 2020.
He was charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm (personal use of a firearm) and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, both felonies. He was also convicted of an additional felony count of recklessly discharging a firearm.
The “Hot Girl Summer” emcee, 28, testified during the trial about the events that led up to her horrific foot injuries.
Megan claimed Lanez, 30, fired several shots at her while yelling “dance, bitch!” after they got into an argument about their sexual relationship and respective music careers.
“I’m stunned. “I’m terrified,” the Houston native said during her testimony. “I hear a gunshot and can’t believe he’s shooting at me.”
Lanez allegedly offered her and Harris $1 million each to remain silent about what happened.
Megan’s attorney, Alex Spiro, told Page Six after the verdict, “The jury got it right. “I am relieved that Meg has received justice.”
Throughout the trial, Lanez maintained his innocence and previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.
For the charges, the rapper faces 22 years in prison and a “strong likelihood” of deportation back to Canada.
On April 10, he is scheduled to be sentenced.
