Nigerian Army troops have successfully dismantled several illegal refining sites in Rivers and Bayelsa States within the Niger Delta region.
According to a video shared by the Nigerian Petroleum Company Limited on X, the operation was carried out by the Land Component of the Joint Task Force, South-South, under Operation Delta Safe.
Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of the 6 Division Army Public Relations, confirmed the operation in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
The statement revealed that troops uncovered and destroyed multiple illegal refining sites in Rivers and Bayelsa States. In Rivers, specifically in the Odagwa area of Etche Local Government, three illegal refining sites were dismantled, and over 30,000 liters of stolen and illegally refined products were confiscated and destroyed.
Further operations around Akaso field and Cawthorne channel led to the discovery of another illegal site, complete with receivers and extensive pipes used to transport stolen crude oil.
In Bayelsa State, Sector 2 troops, during routine patrols along Dasaba Creek in Nembe LGA, seized over 12,000 liters of stolen and illegally refined products. They also recovered a fiber boat, five ovens, metal drums, and large storage reservoirs used in these illicit operations.
These actions are part of Operation Delta Safe’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal refining and protect the environment in the Niger Delta region.
