Trump Raises Alarm Over Killings of Christians in Nigeria
Former US President Donald Trump has renewed his claim that Christians in Nigeria are being killed in large numbers, calling the situation an “existential threat” to the faith community.
In a video shared on the White House’s official X account on Wednesday, Trump alleged that “thousands and thousands” of Christians were being massacred by what he described as “radical Islamists.”
“The level of violence in Nigeria is shocking and must be stopped immediately,” Trump said in the clip. “Christianity is facing an existential threat. Thousands are dying, and radical extremists are behind this mass slaughter.”
He went on to announce that he had formally classified Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” a legal designation used by the US government for nations accused of violating religious freedoms.
“When Christians—or any group—are being killed the way they are in Nigeria, something must be done,” he said firmly.
Trump cited alarming figures, claiming that thousands of Christians had been killed in Nigeria compared to global numbers, describing them as “horrible and heartbreaking.”
He called on key members of Congress, including Congressman Riley Moore and Chairman Tom Cole, to investigate the situation urgently and provide a report.
“I want this matter looked into immediately,” Trump said. “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities continue.”
He added that America remained committed to defending persecuted Christians around the world.
“We are ready and willing to protect our Christian brothers and sisters. The killings must stop,” he emphasized.
Earlier, Trump had warned that the US could consider military intervention if the violence persisted. His administration’s decision to label Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” has since been rejected by the Nigerian government, which denies any ongoing campaign of religious persecution.
