Donald Trump is set to be sworn in for a second term as US president on Monday, marking a historic return to the White House. At 78, Trump becomes the oldest president to take the oath of office, promising a bold “new era” for the United States amidst global anticipation of his leadership style.
Due to freezing temperatures, the inauguration ceremony will be held indoors at the US Capitol. Despite the shift in venue, Trump’s return promises a whirlwind of activity. He has pledged swift action through executive orders aimed at overturning the policies of his predecessor, Joe Biden, including plans for immediate deportations of undocumented migrants.
In contrast to his first inauguration in 2017, where he warned of “American carnage,” Trump now strikes a more optimistic tone, describing his vision as a “brand new day” for the nation. At a pre-inauguration rally, Trump told supporters, “I will act with historic speed to address every crisis facing our country,” adding a lighter note by dancing on stage with the Village People.
However, Trump also revisited divisive themes that fueled his recent electoral win over Vice President Kamala Harris. He vowed to address issues at the southern border and push back against “woke” policies, including what he referred to as “transgender insanity” in schools.
A “Golden Age” Begins
Trump enters the history books not only as the oldest incoming president but also as one of the few leaders, alongside Grover Cleveland, to return to power after a prior defeat. In a gesture of civility, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host Trump and Melania for a meeting at the White House before accompanying them to the Capitol for the ceremony.
Unlike his 2021 departure, when he skipped Biden’s inauguration following the Capitol riots, this transition is intended to project unity. Nevertheless, the mood remains charged, with Trump’s rhetoric often blending triumph with controversy.
Because of record-breaking cold, Trump’s swearing-in will take place inside the Capitol’s Rotunda, echoing Ronald Reagan’s indoor ceremony in 1985. Trump’s spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, described the moment as the dawn of a “Golden Age for America.”
Still, many remain unsettled by Trump’s rhetoric of retribution, including promises to confront political adversaries and members of the press. His rise back to power comes despite surviving two assassination attempts and a criminal conviction, making his political journey unlike any other.
The Trump Effect
Trump’s inauguration will feature some of the world’s wealthiest figures, including Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos, who have aligned with his vision. Musk, now positioned to lead cost-saving measures for the administration, described Trump’s victory as a step toward securing America’s strength for generations.
On his first day in office, Trump plans to issue around 100 executive orders, addressing issues such as border security, energy policies, and reversing diversity initiatives introduced by Biden. He also hinted at pardons for January 6 rioters, stating that his supporters would be “very happy” with his decisions.
Globally, Trump’s return has sparked both concern and anticipation. His administration promises sweeping changes, from imposing tariffs to reexamining foreign aid. Right-wing leaders, such as Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have expressed strong support, with Meloni attending the inauguration in a break from tradition.
As Trump prepares to retake the Oval Office, his unpredictable style and bold promises suggest the next chapter in American politics will be anything but ordinary.
