Tunisia’s President, Kais Saied, has announced that municipal councils elected in 2018 will be dissolved and replaced by special delegations.
The councils were seen as one of Tunisia’s democratic gains following the 2011 uprising that toppled the autocratic regime of Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.

The councils are dominated by Mr. Saied’s main opposition parties, who are increasingly imposing what his critics call a one-man rule.
He stated that the new councils would be elected as well, but under new rules that he will write.
