Udinese coach Kosta Runjaic remains focused on the upcoming match against Como at Sinigaglia, maintaining a positive atmosphere within the team despite the ongoing investigation surrounding Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye. The 25-year-old Okoye is currently under investigation by the Udine Public Prosecutor’s Office after unusual betting activity linked to a yellow card he received during a Serie A match against Lazio in March 2024.
Runjaic emphasized, “Our main focus is the match against Como. While I’m not privy to specific discussions among the players, I’m deeply involved in tactical planning. The locker room atmosphere is excellent, and team spirit remains high as we continue to prepare with dedication and intensity.”
Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport reveal that betting agency Sisal flagged unusual wagers, especially those predicting Okoye would receive a yellow card during the Lazio match. Okoye was cautioned for time-wasting in the 64th minute of Udinese’s 2-1 victory.
The investigation has also brought attention to Diego Giordano, a 40-year-old pizza restaurant owner in Udine, who allegedly discussed the betting at his Biffi pizzeria before the wager was finalized at a Sisal outlet just before the game.
If Okoye is found guilty of breaching Article 24 of the Italian Code of Sports Justice, which prohibits professional athletes from betting on events organized by FIGC, UEFA, and FIFA, he could face a suspension ranging from seven months to four years. However, Okoye’s legal team has denied the accusations, claiming there is no solid evidence to back up the allegations.
Amidst this investigation, Okoye is recovering from wrist surgery, which has kept him off the pitch. To bolster the goalkeeping squad, Udinese has signed Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik.
Since joining Udinese from Watford in 2023, Okoye has made 37 appearances and solidified his position as the first-choice goalkeeper before his injury.
