The United Kingdom has downgraded a travel warning issued to its citizens about visiting Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.
Over fears of possible terror attacks, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia issued separate advisories to their citizens last month, advising them to avoid all but essential travel to the city and its surrounding areas.
The US had gone so far as to order the evacuation of its diplomatic personnel.
The travel advisories elicited a strong response from Nigerian authorities, who called them “unnecessary” and “irresponsible.”
The UK High Commission in Nigeria announced on Monday that the travel advisory for British citizens in Abuja has been changed from “Amber” to “Green.”
The UK government “no longer advises against all but essential travel” to the city, according to a statement, but “some hazards remain.”
It also stated that there is still a travel advisory in place for seven other Nigerian states.
Among the many security issues that Nigeria is dealing with are attacked by armed extremist groups and kidnappings for ransom by criminal gangs. Other Western countries have not yet made public any revisions to their citizens’ earlier travel advisories.
