UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Sudan’s warring factions to end the fighting immediately before the conflict erupts into a full-fledged war.
Mr. Guterres said in Kenya that the people of Sudan were facing a humanitarian disaster, with hospitals destroyed, food and aid warehouses looted, and millions facing food insecurity.
Earlier, the UN’s humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, currently in Sudan, stated that he is attempting to secure commitments from all parties to allow humanitarian supplies into the most severely affected areas.
Sudanese factions have agreed to a new seven-day ceasefire beginning on Thursday, but previous ceasefires have failed.
Mr. Griffiths claimed that six UN World Food Programme trucks were looted on their way to Darfur, despite assurances that they would be safe.
