Peter Obi Congratulates Kamala Harris, Urges Nigeria to Embrace Fair Elections
Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, recently congratulated U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, commending her resilience and dedication during the recent American presidential race. Although the election concluded with a win for Donald Trump, Obi applauded Harris for her courage and strength throughout the campaign.
In a statement on Thursday, Obi emphasized that the peaceful handling of the U.S. election could serve as a powerful example for Nigeria, highlighting the need to let go of outdated practices in the electoral process.
Reflecting on the broader impact, Obi expressed optimism about Trump’s win, hoping it would reinforce democratic values globally and contribute to peace.
“Yesterday, I extended my congratulations to President Donald Trump on his return as the 47th U.S. President,” Obi shared. “I believe his victory can strengthen democracy worldwide and bring about much-needed global peace.”
Obi also acknowledged Harris’s resilience, saying, “She ran a campaign full of courage and commitment, but in the end, the will of the people prevailed.”
Encouraging Nigeria to draw lessons from the U.S. election, Obi continued, “The peaceful conduct of these U.S. elections and the smooth transmission of results should inspire us in Nigeria to move beyond practices like vote-buying, electoral violence, and the disruptions that undermine our democracy.”
The former Anambra governor added, “A true democratic election is one where the people’s voices are fully reflected through their votes. As a nation, let’s come together to rebuild trust in our electoral process, ensuring it is free, fair, and genuinely represents the people’s will.”
