The United States has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Ghana’s newly elected President, John Dramani Mahama, and Vice President-elect, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
In a statement dated December 10, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Ghana’s Electoral Commission and other stakeholders for their efforts in ensuring a credible election. However, he urged immediate investigations into incidents of election-related violence and called for accountability for any resulting deaths.
Blinken reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Ghana, emphasizing shared values and mutual interests.
Mahama’s Historic Win
John Dramani Mahama, leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), emerged victorious in Ghana’s December 7, 2024, presidential election, defeating Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa announced that Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), surpassing Dr. Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes (41.61%). This decisive margin of 1,671,093 votes sparked celebrations across the nation among NDC supporters.
