Victor Osimhen took to Instagram to express his admiration for Nigerian teammate Anthony Nwakaeme after their encounter in Galatasaray’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Trabzonspor on Monday.
Osimhen, who is currently on loan from Napoli, had missed Galatasaray’s Europa League match against Malmo last Thursday due to a minor injury. However, he made a successful return to the bench as the Turkish champions faced off against their rivals Trabzonspor at Rams Park on Monday.
The talented striker was introduced in the 75th minute, adding energy to Galatasaray’s attack. His contribution proved crucial, as the team secured a dramatic 98th-minute winner to claim the victory.
Nwakaeme also made his presence felt for Trabzonspor, playing a full 90 minutes. The 35-year-old forward showcased his skill and continues to be a key player for his club, contributing with one goal and one assist this season.
After the match, Victor Osimhen posted a picture of himself and Nwakaeme on his Instagram story with the caption: “Good to see you again, senior man.”
Nwakaeme earned his only cap for Nigeria during a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Algeria on November 17. Although Nigeria secured a 1-1 draw in that game, FIFA later awarded Algeria a 3-0 win due to Nigeria fielding an ineligible player.
While Nwakaeme has not played for the national team since that match, he has not officially retired from international football. However, a return to the national team appears unlikely. His experience and talent continue to shine in domestic competitions, and he remains a respected figure in Nigerian football.
Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen, who was named the 2023 Africa Player of the Year, congratulated his countryman Ademola Lookman, who claimed the award in 2024.
In an interview with Oganla Media, Osimhen said, “He knows my thoughts on it. I spoke to him personally, and he was the clear favorite to win. I told him to enjoy the moment with his family because I know how hard it is to get there. It’s a big moment, overwhelming even.”
