Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen’s goal against FC Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 has earned him a nomination for the Goal of the Week award.
Osimhen, playing for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, featured in the UEFA Champions League clash against Barcelona at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday night.
In the 60th minute, Robert Lewandowski gave FC Barcelona the lead, but Victor Osimhen equalized for Napoli just fifteen minutes later in spectacular fashion.
Osimhen found himself in the penalty box, tightly marked by Inigo Martinez. Displaying exceptional skill, the 25-year-old Nigerian striker evaded Martinez’s defense and scored.
The goal resulted in a 1-1 draw, with hopes high for Osimhen’s performance in the return leg on March 12.
Osimhen’s goal will compete with strikes from Robert Lewandowski, Donyell Malen of PSV Eindhoven, and Gelano of Porto for the Champions League goal of the week award.
Meanwhile, Napoli’s new coach Francesco Calzona has emphasized that player selection will be based on performance rather than reputation. This statement serves as a warning to players like Victor Osimhen, who played 75 minutes in the game against Barcelona on Wednesday night.
“I keep the players on the field who are doing well, I don’t look at their names,” Calzona told Sky Sports Italia after the Champions League clash with Barca.
