Former US President Donald Trump narrowly escaped a potentially fatal attack during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where a gunman targeted him with multiple shots.
President Bola Tinubu strongly condemned the assassination attempt against Trump, which occurred on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Trump was addressing supporters when gunshots rang out, causing him to clutch his head in shock. He quickly took cover as Secret Service agents shielded him from further harm.
The shooter, positioned on a nearby roof, was swiftly neutralized by a special forces sniper, averting further tragedy. Sadly, one member of the audience lost their life, and two others sustained injuries during the incident.
After the ordeal, Trump confirmed sustaining a bullet wound to the upper part of his right ear, visibly bleeding as he was escorted off stage.
Reacting to the attack, President Tinubu expressed his dismay, emphasizing that violence has no place in democratic societies.
In a statement shared on his official platform, Tinubu extended sympathy to Trump and his family, as well as offering condolences to the deceased spectator’s family and wishing a swift recovery to the injured.
“The attack on former President Donald Trump is reprehensible and undermines democratic principles. Violence must never be tolerated in a democracy.
“My thoughts are with Mr. Trump for a swift recovery, and I extend condolences to the family of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recuperation.
“Nigeria stands united with the United States of America during this challenging time,” Tinubu affirmed.
