The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s electoral commission says it has begun voter registration in seven provinces in the country’s east, where fighting between the army and rebels has displaced millions of civilians.
It is the final round of voter registration before the general election in December of this year.
Voters will be registered in the volatile provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, as well as in the United States and Canada, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the commission, voter registration began in December and has resulted in at least 12 million people registering to vote.
According to the UN, the violence in the country’s east has displaced approximately 5.6 million people who are in desperate need of food and shelter.
