Waje has opened up about why she decided to cut off communication with the father of her daughter, sharing a heartfelt story about motherhood, responsibility, and protecting her child’s peace.
Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, the award-winning singer revealed that her daughter’s father initially denied the pregnancy when she was just 16. It was a painful period, as she recalled keeping the news from her mother until she was five months along.
“When we went to tell his family, he denied it,” she said. “He kept saying it wasn’t his child, so it became my word against his.”
Years later, Waje shared that he reached out again, apologizing and expressing a desire to reconnect with their daughter. “He came back and said, ‘I was young and immature then, but I’d like to meet my daughter. I’m sorry, Vivian. This child deserves to know her father,’” she recounted.
Although Waje wasn’t opposed to the idea, she wanted him to take legal responsibility as a Canadian citizen. “I told him, ‘File for your child.’ My daughter wasn’t even interested in citizenship at the time,” she said.
They agreed to confirm paternity through a DNA test, but he delayed the process and eventually disappeared from contact. “By 2015, I stopped hearing from him completely,” she explained.
Waje clarified that her decision to end communication wasn’t out of resentment but out of love and protection for her daughter. “Sometimes when a single parent, especially a mother, says no to the other parent’s involvement, it’s not about bitterness,” she said. “It’s because that person could disrupt the child’s peace.”
Her story reflects the quiet strength of many single parents — choosing emotional stability over chaos, and peace over pressure.
