The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has expressed its openness to welcoming Governor Siminalayi Fubara, should he decide to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on behalf of the party, APC Chairman Emeka Beke—through his Chief of Staff, Chizi Enyi—shared that if Fubara makes the move, it could work out well for both the governor and the party. According to him, such a shift would strengthen the APC’s presence and involvement in the state’s political space.
This statement comes as talks swirl around a possible defection by Fubara amid the ongoing political standoff in Rivers, which recently led to his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
“We’d welcome him, of course,” Beke said in a recent interview. “Why wouldn’t we? His joining us could give the party an edge politically in the state.”
He also pointed out that governors from opposition parties often face uphill battles when it comes to securing funds or participating in certain state-level initiatives. If Fubara switched sides, Beke said, it would naturally position him as the APC’s leader in Rivers—something that could reshape the political landscape.
With a possible defection on the horizon, Beke noted that the party is willing to guide the governor in navigating state leadership more effectively. While the APC had previously withheld suggestions and feedback as an opposition force, he hinted that things would change if Fubara came on board.
“As it stands, we’ve kept our recommendations to ourselves out of principle,” Beke said. “But if he joins the APC, we’re ready to support him with ideas that could genuinely improve the lives of the people in Rivers and those living within the state.”
