The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it has resumed operations in Sudan, where fighting has left millions hungry.
Food distribution was expected to begin in the coming days in the states of Gedaref, Gezira, Kassala, and White Nile.
“We will take the utmost care to ensure the safety of all our staff and partners as we rush to meet the growing needs of the most vulnerable,” the UN agency said in a statement on Monday.
Three WFP staff members were killed on the first day of the conflict between Sudan’s army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to the agency, more than 15 million people in Sudan were already facing severe food insecurity prior to the outbreak of conflict, and these numbers are expected to rise significantly as the fighting continues.
Meanwhile, the UN’s emergency relief coordinator, Martin Griffiths, is set to arrive in Sudan on Tuesday to assess the country’s humanitarian situation.
