Phyna Calls Out Dangote Group Over Statement on Sister’s Accident
Big Brother Naija star Phyna has expressed her dissatisfaction with the Dangote Group’s response to the recent accident in Auchi, Edo State, involving one of the company’s trucks and leaving her sister, Ruth Otabor, critically injured.
Ruth, who had graduated less than a week before the incident, lost one leg to amputation, and doctors fear the other may not be saved. Witnesses say the truck driver fled the scene but was chased down and apprehended by a lecturer who saw it happen. The truck’s license plate was reportedly removed before the vehicle was taken into police custody.
In their statement, Dangote Group said senior company officials and their insurance team visited the accident site, met with law enforcement, and checked on the victim and her family at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital. They confirmed Ruth would receive full medical care and compensation in line with company policy, while also wishing her a speedy recovery.
Phyna, however, pushed back on several points in the company’s statement. She objected to her sister being addressed as “Mrs.,” questioned the intent behind it, and criticized the company for turning a hospital visit into what she described as “social media content.” She also demanded that no cameras be present at any future meetings regarding the matter.
“Appropriate compensation? Quick recovery from an already amputated leg? What speed are you moving at right now? Let’s not forget the bike rider, who is also in critical condition,” Phyna wrote.
“@DangoteGroup, who gave permission to take photos of my family and post them online? That’s disrespectful. If such pictures were taken of my sister, I hope they’re never made public. Moving forward, no cameras at meetings — period. And what’s with calling her ‘Mrs. Ruth Otabor’? What narrative are you trying to start? You’re playing with me.”
