A New Chapter Begins: Meet Pope Leo XIV
The Catholic Church has a new spiritual leader—Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV.
At 69, the Chicago-born cleric brings a unique mix of experience, humility, and global perspective to his new role. Though American by birth, Prevost has spent much of his religious life in Peru, where he became a citizen and served as bishop and then archbishop in Chiclayo. That deep connection to Latin America has shaped much of his pastoral approach and made him a bridge between worlds.
Before his election, he led the powerful Vatican office responsible for choosing bishops—a position Pope Francis entrusted to him in 2023. His influence was felt quietly but firmly across the Church. He also previously headed the Augustinian order and was a key voice on the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
One of his most meaningful contributions so far? Supporting Pope Francis in reshaping how bishops are selected—including bringing women into the decision-making process. That move was both historic and a clear signal of the direction the Church may continue to take.
Those who’ve worked with him describe him as warm and down-to-earth, someone who carries heavy responsibilities without losing his smile. “Even when things got difficult, he always found a way to stay joyful,” shared Rev. Fidel Purisaca Vigil, who once served as his communications director in Peru.
Now, as Pope Leo XIV, he steps into a role of immense responsibility—but with the same grounded spirit he’s carried throughout his journey. A new chapter begins, and the world is watching with hope.
