Governor Okpebholo Stands by Statement Urging Peter Obi to Notify Him Before Visiting Edo
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has doubled down on his recent remarks to former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, insisting that Obi should inform him before entering the state.
The comment, which stirred reactions online, was initially made on Friday, July 18, 2025, during the defection event of Hon. Marcus Onobun, who represents Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben at the National Assembly.
Addressing the public again on Tuesday at the launch of Edo’s new transportation system, Okpebholo clarified that his comment was a piece of advice—not a threat. He emphasized that as the chief security officer of the state, it’s only proper to be informed when high-profile individuals visit.
“If asking him to notify me before coming to Edo is a crime, then so be it,” the governor said. “I said it as a caution, based on personal experience, and I have no regrets.”
He went on to recall a tragic incident in 2024 under the previous administration. According to Okpebholo, he ignored a warning from the then Commissioner of Police to remain at Benin Airport, which sadly led to the death of his police orderly, Inspector Akor Onu.
“This is not about politics. I’ve lived it. I know what can go wrong when security protocols are ignored,” he explained.
Responding to criticism from Obi’s supporters, Okpebholo appeared unfazed. “I’m not here for social media drama. I’ve given my advice, and it’s up to him to take it or leave it,” he added.
