2Baba Opens Up on Divorce, New Love, and Why He’s Done Pretending
Nigerian music icon 2Baba has finally spoken his truth—and he isn’t sugarcoating a thing.
In a candid chat on the +234 Mzansi Podcast, the 49-year-old artist opened up about the end of his marriage to Annie Macaulay and the beginning of a new chapter with Natasha Osawaru, a lawmaker from Edo State.
His relationship with Natasha made headlines earlier this year after he proposed to her the night before Valentine’s Day. But according to 2Baba, it wasn’t a whirlwind romance based on looks or status—it was something deeper.
“I’ve never been someone who chases appearance,” he said. “Yeah, beauty’s cool, but it’s not what holds a relationship together. I wanted someone I could talk to without walking on eggshells. Someone who’s calm, kind, and easy to laugh with.”
He continued, “I’ve always said—if any woman disrespects me or starts doing nonsense, I’m out. Life’s too short for unnecessary drama.”
After 12 years of marriage and over two decades of shared history with Annie, 2Baba says the decision to part ways wasn’t easy—but it was necessary.
“Annie is a great person. We had a strong bond. But sometimes, love alone isn’t enough,” he admitted. “We both tried. But it just wasn’t working anymore, and I’m not going to start pointing fingers or digging into the details. We understand each other, and that’s what matters.”
Despite the separation, he made it clear there’s no bad blood. “All the mothers of my children are amazing in their own way. People love to stir drama where there’s none. But I respect every woman who’s been part of my journey.”
Now serving as Technical Adviser on Entertainment and Community Outreach to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, 2Baba also had a few words for society’s expectations.
“People stay in broken marriages because they’re scared of being judged,” he said. “But nobody really knows what happens behind closed doors. If it’s not working, you try to fix it. If it still doesn’t work, you walk away—simple. You shouldn’t have to die in silence just to look like the perfect couple.”
And then came the hot take that’s gotten him in trouble before.
“I’ll say it again—even if people don’t like it: men are not naturally wired to stick to one woman sexually. A man can truly love one woman with all his heart, but his biology doesn’t always agree with monogamy.”
He added, “That doesn’t mean every man acts on it, but let’s stop pretending like it’s not real. It’s nature. Some men choose differently—and that’s fine. But don’t shame others for telling their truth.”
Annie publicly confirmed their separation during The Headies Awards in April, putting an end to a love story that started in the late ’90s. The two met in 1999, became friends, lovers, and eventually, one of Nigeria’s most talked-about couples.
They got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2012 and had their fairy-tale white wedding in Dubai the following year. They share two daughters, Isabella and Olivia, but the road was far from smooth—especially with ongoing tensions around 2Baba’s relationship with Pero Adeniyi, mother of three of his children.
In 2022, they renewed their vows. But now, that chapter is closed.
As for 2Baba, he’s looking ahead—not backward. And this time, he says he’s doing it on his own terms.
