Tinubu Assigns VP Shettima to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation at UN General Assembly
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has decided to focus on pressing domestic matters and will not be attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Instead, he has tasked Vice President Kashim Shettima with leading Nigeria’s delegation to the international event.
The 79th UNGA, which began on September 10, 2024, features key sessions such as the General Debate, running from September 24 to 30, and several high-level meetings, including discussions on sea level rise and nuclear disarmament.
According to a statement from the presidency, President Tinubu chose to remain in Nigeria to address significant national challenges. Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, confirmed this in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He noted that after Tinubu’s recent trips to China and the UK, the president wishes to prioritize domestic issues, particularly in the wake of the severe flooding that has affected parts of the country.
Vice President Shettima is expected to represent Nigeria in high-level debates, address the General Assembly, and participate in key meetings during the summit.
