Will Smith, who has received praise for his performance in the film “Emancipation,” is one of the nominees for the NAACP Image Awards this year.

Smith’s first major project since slapping Chris Rock on stage during the Academy Awards ceremony in March after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, earned him a nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture.

The NAACP’s president and CEO, Derrick Johnson, said on Thursday that Smith’s work in the film was deserving of the nomination and that the NAACP nominates projects rather than individuals.
