The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has expressed disappointment with President Bola Tinubu’s government, stating that it has failed to offer hope to Nigerians. As the National Leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Adams criticized the current administration’s economic and security policies, claiming they have worsened the country’s situation.
In an open letter titled “State of the Nation,” Adams accused Tinubu of becoming authoritarian by charging #EndBadGovernance protesters with treason, a tactic he claims Tinubu himself used against previous governments.
“When you introduced the ‘Emilokan’ slogan during the 2023 election campaign, many believed that as a modern-day democrat, you would do better than your predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, whose administration deepened poverty and insecurity from 2015 to 2023,” Adams remarked.
However, he stated that the public’s expectations have been unmet. “Mr. President, to be honest, you have disappointed many Nigerians who thought you would be the leader they were hoping for. The facts speak for themselves,” Adams added.
Adams pointed out that under Tinubu’s leadership, fuel prices have skyrocketed, with a litre now costing over ₦1,000, compared to less than ₦200 before May 2023. He also criticized the weakening of the naira, which has dropped from ₦740 to over ₦1,600 to the dollar.
Adams questioned the effectiveness of Tinubu’s economic team, particularly Finance Minister Wale Edun and Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso, both of whom worked closely with Tinubu during his time as governor of Lagos State. “What kind of advice are they giving you that convinces you they’re on the right track?” he asked.
On the issue of security, Adams expressed frustration with the rising levels of violence and kidnappings since Tinubu took office. He noted that despite hopes for improvement after Buhari’s tenure, insecurity has worsened under Tinubu’s administration.
Adams also criticized the government’s handling of the August 1 protests, accusing Tinubu of mismanaging public outcry over his policies. “Nigerians came out to express their frustration, yet some were arrested and charged with treason. Who does that? Is this how governments are overthrown, with placards?” he questioned.
He highlighted the increasing poverty rates, noting that more than 75% of Nigerians have fallen below the poverty line, while inflation and unemployment continue to rise. According to Adams, Tinubu’s administration has done little to alleviate the economic hardships facing the country.
In conclusion, Gani Adams declared that Tinubu’s government offers no hope, with policies that have driven more Nigerians into poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.
