Zelensky Seeks to Mend Ties With Trump Amid U.S.-Ukraine Tensions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his willingness to restore relations with U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing his desire to work together toward lasting peace in Ukraine.
Following a public dispute and the suspension of U.S. military aid, Zelensky described the situation as “regrettable” and signaled his readiness to sign a key minerals agreement with Washington.
Call for Truce Amid Growing Strains
Zelensky proposed a ceasefire in the air and at sea as an initial step toward ending the ongoing conflict, highlighting the need for diplomatic efforts. However, the fallout between Kyiv and Washington has intensified after last week’s tense Oval Office meeting between the two leaders.
On social media, Zelensky stated:
“My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to achieve lasting peace. It is time to make things right.”
Trump’s unexpected decision to halt military aid has raised concerns in Kyiv and across Europe, fueling speculation about a shift in U.S. foreign policy.
Moscow’s Response and European Reactions
The Kremlin welcomed Trump’s move, with Russian officials suggesting it could push Ukraine toward negotiations. Meanwhile, European leaders have been scrambling to reinforce their support for Kyiv.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an initiative to mobilize €800 billion for defense, aiming to strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities. She emphasized the urgency of the situation, pledging to provide Kyiv with “immediate military equipment.”
An emergency European Union summit is scheduled to take place, focusing on solidifying European backing for Ukraine in the wake of shifting U.S. policies.
Frustration and Concern in Ukraine
Many Ukrainians have voiced disappointment over the recent developments. A Kyiv resident described Trump’s decision as a “stab in the back,” while Ukrainian military volunteers criticized the move as an abandonment of their struggle.
Poland has also reacted strongly, noting that the U.S. decision was made without consulting NATO allies. Reports indicate that military aid shipments bound for Ukraine have already been disrupted.
French officials echoed these concerns, revealing that entire trainloads of U.S. military supplies were being held back. In response, France has vowed to explore alternative ways to fill the gap left by Washington’s withdrawal.
U.S. Position and Future Talks
The suspension of aid affects hundreds of millions of dollars in weaponry that was in the process of being delivered to Ukraine. Reports suggest the decision has already had a tangible impact on the battlefield.
Despite recent tensions, Zelensky has reaffirmed Ukraine’s willingness to finalize a minerals agreement with the U.S., granting Washington preferential access to Ukraine’s natural resources.
As NATO membership remains off the table for now, Kyiv is exploring alternative security measures backed by Western allies. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Ukraine, stating that “no one wants peace more than Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, France and the UK are reportedly considering a one-month ceasefire proposal, potentially involving international troops as peacekeepers. However, U.S. Vice President JD Vance has dismissed the idea, questioning whether countries that have not been involved in recent wars should lead such efforts.
Vance later clarified his remarks, insisting he had not singled out specific nations and acknowledging the contributions of both France and the UK in past conflicts.
As diplomatic maneuvering continues, the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations remains uncertain, with European nations stepping up their role in determining Kyiv’s next steps.
