German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has spoken out against former U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about seizing control of the Panama Canal, calling his statements “unacceptable.”
In a recent interview, Baerbock addressed Trump’s renewed pledge to reclaim the strategic waterway, a promise he reiterated during his inaugural address. She also commented on his desire to exert control over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO ally.
“Any threat against a NATO member or other states is, of course, entirely unacceptable,” Baerbock told German broadcaster RBB. However, she emphasized the importance of a thoughtful response to Trump’s provocative statements.
“It’s not just about how President Trump expresses himself but about understanding the motivations behind his words,” Baerbock said. She urged Germany to focus on protecting its own interests while analyzing the broader implications of Trump’s rhetoric.
Concerns Over the Panama Canal
Baerbock highlighted that Trump’s comments may be rooted in concerns about China’s growing influence. “China is investing heavily in ports and critical infrastructure worldwide,” she noted, suggesting that Trump’s remarks about the Panama Canal reflect his focus on countering Chinese global expansion.
During his address, Trump criticized the 1999 transfer of the canal to Panama, claiming that while the U.S. handed it over, China now operates key elements of the waterway. “We didn’t give it to China; we gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back,” Trump declared, refusing to rule out the possibility of military action.
Germany’s Approach
Baerbock made it clear that Germany remains committed to its alliance with the United States, even as Trump begins his second term. “The U.S. is one of our most important allies, and we will continue to work closely together,” she said.
However, she emphasized that Germany has been strengthening its own strategic positioning. “We are more intensively and firmly prepared to stand up for our interests,” Baerbock concluded, underscoring the need for Europe to remain vigilant and united in response to shifting global dynamics.
