Iyanya Dedicates Song to Benue Victims Amid Rising Outrage Over Attacks
Nigerian singer Iyanya has sent a heartfelt message to the people of Benue State, following a series of violent attacks that have left hundreds dead and many injured.
Sharing a clip of Joy in Chaos—a gospel remix by Holy Drill—on Instagram, Iyanya expressed his grief and support:
“I want to dedicate this song to all the people of Benue State. It is a trying time for the whole country because we all share your pain,” he wrote.
In his message, the singer added prayers for families mourning their loved ones, calling on God for comfort during this dark period.
The lyrics of the track, filled with hope and spiritual resilience, echoed his message:
“I still got joy in chaos / I’ve got peace that makes no sense… / ’Cause I’ve built my life on Jesus / He’s never let me down.”
A Nation in Mourning
The situation in Benue has worsened in recent days. On June 14, over 100 residents of Yelwata and Daudu in Guma Local Government Area were killed. By Sunday, the death toll had reportedly risen above 200. The violence later spread to communities in Makurdi LGA, where at least 25 more lives were lost.
2Baba Calls It a “National Emergency”
Benue-born music legend 2Baba couldn’t hold back his anguish in an emotional video shared on social media.
“What is going on in my state has become a national emergency,” he said. “This thing has to stop; enough is enough.”
He called on all relevant authorities and stakeholders to treat the crisis with the urgency it deserves. “My heart is heavy, terribly sad, terribly angry,” he added.
- 2Baba’s outcry drew a wave of solidarity. Rapper Olamide reposted his video with the caption: “Prayers up for Benue.” Other voices in entertainment, including Kate Henshaw, Falz, Patience Ozokwor, Mayorkun, Ayra Starr, Mr Macaroni, and many others, joined the call for action.
President Tinubu Visits Victims in Makurdi
Responding to national outrage, President Bola Tinubu made a visit to Benue on Wednesday. He met with victims receiving treatment at a hospital in Makurdi and addressed leaders and stakeholders at a meeting held at the Government House.
“Police, I hope your men are on alert. How come no arrest has been made?” the President questioned, urging the nation’s intelligence agencies to improve their operations and deliver results.
The visit included appearances by Governor Hyacinth Alia, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and other top government officials. The state declared a public holiday in honour of the President’s presence.
As Benue continues to mourn, the pressure for justice and real change grows louder across the country.
