Microsoft Promises to Stand by Europe—Even in Uncertain Times
During a visit to Brussels on Wednesday, Microsoft made it clear: the company is doubling down on its commitment to Europe, especially when it comes to keeping European data safe.
As tensions in global politics shift and questions grow around transatlantic relations—especially with the return of former U.S. President Donald Trump—Microsoft is positioning itself as a steady partner in a time of change.
Speaking to European leaders, Microsoft President Brad Smith highlighted the importance of building stronger business ties across the Atlantic. “This is a time when companies can help strengthen global connections,” he said.
To back that up, Microsoft is rolling out major expansions across 16 countries in Europe—more data centers, more tech partnerships, and a focus on supporting a local ecosystem for artificial intelligence. While American companies currently dominate the European cloud space, Microsoft says it wants to work more closely with local providers to build a more balanced landscape.
There’s been growing concern in Europe about relying too heavily on U.S.-based tech firms, especially with the unpredictable political climate in Washington. Some fear that if international relationships sour, tech access could be used as leverage.
Microsoft isn’t ignoring those worries. In a blog post shared the same day, Smith addressed the “what if” scenario—if a government tried to force Microsoft to pull the plug on its European services, he promised the company wouldn’t just comply without a fight.
“If that ever happens,” he wrote, “we will challenge it in court.”
In his remarks, Smith emphasized that Microsoft understands what’s at stake for European citizens and businesses. “People across Europe are right to be concerned,” he said. “And we’re making it clear—we’ll be here, no matter what.”
