Davido Reflects on 15 Years in Music and Why He Feels Overlooked
For over a decade, Davido has been a driving force in the music scene—churning out hit after hit and shaping the sound of modern Afrobeats. Yet, according to him, recognition hasn’t always matched the impact.
In a recent chat with content creator Egungun of Lagos, the award-winning artist shared a personal truth: he’s been doing this for 15 years, and despite the global love, the acknowledgment still feels lacking.
“I’ve been doing this at the highest level for a long time,” he said. “But sometimes, it feels like people don’t really give me the respect I’ve earned.”
When asked whether he thinks he has detractors, Davido didn’t deny it—but he also didn’t dwell on it. “There are haters, sure,” he responded. “But when I travel, people everywhere show me love. So sometimes I wonder… where are these haters hiding?”
Beyond reflecting on his own journey, Davido also opened up about a game-changing moment in his career—meeting R&B superstar Chris Brown.
Speaking during an episode of the Bagfuel Brigade podcast, Davido recalled how their connection began in 2018, through a mutual friend.
“One day, a friend of his FaceTimed me,” he said. “My song was playing in the background, and I asked where he was. He said, ‘I’m at Chris Brown’s place.’ Next thing I know, he turns the camera and shows Chris dancing to my music. I couldn’t believe it.”
From that moment, everything shifted. Davido credits their encounter as a turning point, not just creatively but professionally as well. “That moment did something big for me,” he added.
With a global fan base, countless accolades, and collaborations with some of the world’s biggest names, Davido’s journey is still unfolding—but it’s clear he’s not waiting around for flowers. He’s planting his own legacy.
